35 Years of Cable TV !!
St Kitts-Nevis Cable Communications Ltd, more commonly referred to as The Cable was established in September, 1983 by a group of investors from the United States of America. Live telecast of the historical event on the attainment of our independence from Great Britain on 19th September, 1983 was the first major achievement, however, commercial operations actually commenced in May, 1984 from the Archibald Building on Central Street with a staff of eight offering twelve Cable TV channels to the public.
In 1990, 69% of the major shareholders from the USA were bought out by the Government of St Kitts & Nevis. By 1990 the company had increased its channel line-up to 23 channels thereby providing a wider variety of programming to its customers. The company continued to experience steady growth and moved to new premises on New Street in 1991. Construction of the cable plant continued rapidly and by the middle of 1991 the service was available throughout the entire island of St Kitts with 98% of homes passed.
In response to customer demand The Cable increased its channel line-up to 36 TV channels and 10 FM radio stations in 1994. Local advertising insertion on Channel 8 (CNN) was also offered around that time. In 1998 The Cable increased its channel line-up and now offers seventy channels.
Construction of The Cable’s headquarters started in 1999 after purchase of the Uddenberg property situated on the corner of Cayon and New Streets. Operations from this prestigious location began in January, 2001.
In April, 2001 The Cable offered the islands first broadband high speed internet service to its customers as an alternative to the dialup service offered by the phone company. Since then the Internet service has gone from strength to strength with the company now offering the highest islandwide broadband speed through its Lightning Xtreme Package.
